Templates for Microsoft Office

What format should I save my Open Office spreadsheet in so someone with Excel can read it?

My online accounting teacher has Windows Excel. I don’t have Excel; I only have Open Office. She provided a template for my first week’s homework. When I opened it (it was a spreadsheet), I opened it in Open Office and it was a read-only document. So I had to copy and paste into a blank Open Office spreadsheet. When I was done filling out the payroll chart, I saved it as an .ODF (.ODS) file. I submitted it online and my instructor was not able to open it. When she was able to open it, nothing was there. What am I doing wrong? How should I save the file so she can access it easily with her Windows Excel program? I’m getting all stressed out because she is not able to open my work.

.xls is an easy answer. I have Excel on my PC, but may still have OPEN OFFICE to see the choices. I will edit if there are several choices.

On The Excel side, besides .xls, in a spreadsheet is XML, CSV (comma delimited), XLW workbook, maybe WK4 from the old IBM Lotus, XLSX as the newer Excel workbooks, XLT and XLTX as templates. Rather than re-install Open Office, I think you can check easier now just by looking at your choices. Sorry for a slight laziness to go on to another question instead.
